Darrell Ang, conductor
Following their performance at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games opening ceremony, the World Youth Orchestra of the Singapore Games performs a one-night only concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Formed by the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (National University of Singapore) in association with a range of performers including the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, Malaysia Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Peabody Institute (USA) and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (UK), the orchestra performs an exciting programme of music pieces reflecting the inspirational and richly affirmative spirit of the games. Distinguished Singaporean conductor Darrell Ang conducts the orchestra in orchestral favourites including Shostakovich's Festive Overture and Dvořák’s New World Symphony. Also on the programme, contemporary composer Chen Yi's Ge Xu (Antiphony), Michael Torke's Javelin, a 'sonic olympiad' commissioned by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympics in 1994 as well as young Peruvian composer Jimmy Lopez's infectiously energetic Fiesta!
